A History of the Elephant & Hind

Situated in the Market Square of one of England’s oldest towns, the Elephant & Hind has evolved into one of Dover’s most vibrant bars and restaurants, combining a lively modern atmosphere with centuries of heritage.

Today, it is a welcoming venue known for its food, drink, and packed calendar of live events. Yet beneath its contemporary energy lies a deep and fascinating history, making it one of Dover’s oldest surviving hostelries.
Dover itself is among the most continuously inhabited locations in the country, predating the Roman invasion of Britain. The site on which the pub stands is believed to have once overlooked an ancient estuary and may have been connected to the Roman fleet stationed in the area.

Fast forward over a millennium, and by the early 18th century (circa 1729), records point to the establishment of an early inn on or near the site. Over time, it is believed to have operated under a number of names, including the “Dolphin” and later the “Hare and Hounds”, before eventually splitting into two neighbouring establishments known as the “Walmer Castle Inn” and the “Duchess of Kent”.
In 1962, these two pubs were brought together to form what is now known as the Elephant & Hind.
Given Dover’s long and strategic maritime history, it is perhaps no surprise that the building carries its share of stories—some of which are said to linger still for those who believe in the paranormal.

The Modern ‘Ellie’

Today, the Elephant & Hind is a vibrant bar and restaurant at the heart of the town, hosting a lively programme of events including live music, sport, and entertainment throughout the year.
​
We are proud to be an active part of the local community, supporting Dover RNLI and sponsoring the talented Dover Sharks Rugby team. The team at the ‘Ellie’ also proudly champions inclusivity and the LGBTQ+ community, having supported and hosted events including Dover’s first Pride celebrations.
