After exploring the castle, make your way downhill towards Dover town centre and its historic Market Square.

Its most famous exhibit is the internationally important Dover Bronze Age Boat. Discovered locally in 1992, this extraordinary archaeological find offers a fascinating glimpse into cross-Channel travel thousands of years ago.

The museum is an excellent addition to a one-day Dover itinerary, particularly for visitors interested in maritime history, archaeology and the story of the English Channel.

Late Afternoon: See the White Cliffs of Dover

No first visit to the town would be complete without seeing the White Cliffs of Dover.

Visitors with enough time and suitable footwear can follow the established walking route from the town towards the National Trust White Cliffs Visitor Centre. The route offers increasingly impressive views of the cliffs, harbour and Channel.

Alternatively, you can drive, take a taxi or use local visitor transport to reach the clifftop area. Once there, you can enjoy a shorter walk near the visitor centre or follow a longer coastal route if your schedule allows.

Always stay on the marked paths, keep well away from cliff edges and check the weather before setting out. A full clifftop walk takes time, so visitors with a limited schedule may prefer a shorter viewpoint visit.

Evening: Return to Market Square

If you are staying overnight in Dover, return to Market Square to enjoy the town after dark.
