October brings plenty of reasons to get out and enjoy Dover. From local storytelling and art to coastal adventures and Halloween at the castle, there’s a busy month ahead—and the Elephant & Hind in Market Square is ready to welcome you along the way.

Whether you’re planning a weekend with friends or looking for things to do in Dover during October half-term, here are a few dates for your diary.

Discover Dover’s stories

Start the month with Stories of Dover and the World at the Maison Dieu on Saturday 3 October. Running from noon until 4pm, this free event offers an opportunity to explore the stories connecting our town with the wider world. Make an afternoon of it with a wander through Dover and a drink at the Ellie afterwards.

Join the White Cliffs Walking Festival

The White Cliffs Walking Festival runs from 3–10 October, with 20 walks across the district and beyond. Routes range from one to 12 miles, with different difficulty levels and themes covering local landscapes, history and wildlife.

Many walks are free, although some require advance booking. Choose a route that suits you, bring suitable footwear and enjoy a different perspective on White Cliffs Country.

Find something new in the town centre

For a quieter October outing, Catching the Light, an exhibition of paintings by Chris Odgers, runs at SQ Gallery from 10 October to 7 November, with free admission.

History enthusiasts can also put Sunday 18 October in the diary for the Grand Shaft Open Day at Western Heights, listed from 10.30am to 4pm with free entry. These are two good reasons to spend a little more time discovering Dover this autumn.

Enjoy Halloween at Dover Castle

October half-term brings the Great Pumpkin Party to Dover Castle from 24 October to 1 November, between 10am and 4pm.

English Heritage has announced storytelling, spooky games, a themed trail and daily fancy-dress competitions. Activities are included with standard admission, making this a seasonal option for families planning a Dover day out.

Make time for the Elephant & Hind

Back in Market Square, the Ellie brings its own reasons to enjoy October: home-cooked pub food, Kentish ales, a wide choice of drinks and regular weekend live music.

Join us for a meal during kitchen opening hours, arrange a Sunday roast with friends or stop in for a drink after exploring town. Check our latest entertainment updates and book ahead if you’re planning to eat with us.
